Gestern wurde die neue Version veröffentlicht. Was mir besonders gefällt ist, das Wert auf Bugfix Bereingung gelegt wurde.

This release resolves these issues:
COM object creation fails between primary desktop and non-interactive virtual services that affect the Windows Installer service.
The tlink.exe build utility of ThinApp crashes when multiple language icons exist in an executable file.
The %SYSTEMSYTEM%\SPOOL folder causes the capture of printer spool files.

This might cause printing errors in a Microsoft Office package.
Thinapp prevents a captured Lotus Notes package from starting captured Microsoft Office applications to open attachments.
A captured Internet Explorer 7 package cannot detect external Active Directory policies.
Acrobat Reader 9 causes 100 percent utilization.
ThinApp is unable to pass captured batch file shortcut targets that require command-line arguments.
Log Monitor generates errors when a sandbox on the network is locked by another computer.

VMware vEXPERT 2009 Award

Heute morgen erreichte mich die Nachricht, das ich den Award zum vEXPERT erhalten habe. A smile was on my face!
Gratulation an alle anderen, welche diese Auszeichnung bekommen haben und ich hoffe auf eine rege Zusammenarbeit in unserem speziellem Forum.

We are pleased to present you with the VMware vExpert Award for 2009. VMware is giving this award to individuals who have contributed significantly to the community of VMware users over the past year.”

Congratulations and thank you to all our newly minted VMware vExperts. Email went out tonight informing around 300 hard-working bloggers, user group leaders, and virtualization evangelists of all types that they had received a VMware vExpert Award. VMware vExperts were chosen on the basis of the contributions they had made to the community of VMware and virutaliztion users in 2008.

We are not publishing a list of the awardees right now. There will be a public vExpert Directory where the award winners will be able to publish a professional profile.

This is an amazing group of people. The amount of intelligence, experience, and energy in the entire list of nominees was humbling. I’m grateful that they have such passion around this paradigm-changing technology. A big THANK YOU from everybody here at VMware to everyone who applied.

Choosing the final list was challenging, but we had a limited number of awards. There were highly qualified candidates who were either: (1) deeply experienced VMware experts, but without as much demonstrated or organized community contribution as others — we need to come up with an award for these guys! (2) great bloggers who just recently started — we hope they’ll keep it up and join us next year; and (3) early adopters with valuable contributions, but before 2008 — and I hope they’ll be able to join us next year as well.

I’m sure we forgot somebody, and I’m going to kick myself when we figure out who. I’m happy to chat with anybody about the process or what you can do to increase your chances next year. The online and offline communities have just exploded this year, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

I’m honored to be working with all the vExperts this year. My goal is to help them where I can, make them all more successful in their virtualization efforts, and with a little luck get them big promotions and raises. For those of us not on the vExpert list, I hope we’ll be rewarded with deeper blog posts and white papers, more informed and interesting user groups, and amazing new tools.

Community contributions often happen outside of work, and not everybody can spend their nights and weekends telling people why virtualization is so cool. Thanks again for all the hard work and long hours you put in. It’s going to be a great, great year.

Software Nutzungsanalyse und Virtualisierung/ThinApp

Wir werden oft gefragt, warum eigentlich Anwendungsvirtualisierung?
Neben einer ganzen Reihe technischer Vorteile, über die wir bereits berichtet haben, aus denen sich ebenfalls widerum Einsparpotentiale ergeben, haben wir einen ganz anderen Aspekt der Virtualisierung bisher noch nicht beleuchtet.
Durch eine betriebsratskonforme Nutzungsanalyse von Software, kann festgestellt werden, welche Software im Unternehmen tatsächlich genutzt und welche nur Kosten bei geringer Nutzung verursacht. In Kombination mit der Anwendungsvirtualisierung ergeben sich ganz neue Perspektiven, es können die Verwaltungskosten für verteilte Softwareanwendungen minimiert werden und Lizenzen flexibler zugewiesen werden (beachte Lizenzrecht der Hersteller).
Interessant ist, dass meist nur 10-20% der Anwendungen in Unternehmen tatsächlich zu einem hohen Prozentsatz von den Nutzern auch genutzt werden, der überwiegende Anteil der Anwendungen im Unternehmen (gut 80-90 %) machen tatsächlich nur etwa 10% der Nutzung aus. Da es sich hierbei um eine große Anzahl von verschiedenen Softwareanwendungen handelt, produziert die Verwaltung (Paketierung, Bereitstellung, Maintenance, Update) genau dieser Anwendungen gut 50-60% der Softwareverwaltungskosten.
Darüber hinaus wird oft festgestellt, dass genau diese Anwendungen auch selten genutzt werden und viel öfter installiert wurden, als sie tatsächlich benutzt werden. Auch hier schlummert ein enormes Einsparungspotential, allein durch die Nutzungsanalyse und dann erst recht in Kombination mit der Anwendungsvirtualisierung, welche es ermöglich Anwendungen dynamisch zuzuweisen. Freilich immer unter Berücksichtigung des jeweiligen Lizenzrechts der Hersteller, dies muss erfahrungsgemäß pro Hersteller geprüft werden. Die Summen welche hier eingespart werden können, rechtfertigen jedoch alle genannten Aktionen.
